I wished the buck stopped here, as I could use a few.

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

10 Cannots

February 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This was sent to me recently. What do you think?

The 10 Cannots

  1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

  2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

  3. You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.

  4. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

  5. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

  6. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.

  7. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

  8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.

  9. You cannot build character and courage by destroying men’s initiative and independence.

  10.  And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.

Seeking the Saved

I am wondering today if more of our efforts are directed toward seeking the saved than seeking the lost.

What are your thoughts?

Rescue From Present Trouble

February 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Jim Mcguiggan wrote this recently:

Will God rescue you from your present trouble? Who can say; but you’ve been rescued before and know it but you may have been rescued repeatedly and didn’t know it or recognize it.  If things don’t change in that visible way we want it won’t mean he’s holding a grudge or that he’s being the flinty “sin in—punishment out to the nth degree, come what may’’ type judge. He’s never that.

We want the pain gone, of course if we have a heart for him at all, it’s his good will we want and the marker that he’s taken us back to his heart is that easing of our pain and trouble. Some kids may not care what their fathers think about them so long as he bails them out of every jam they get themselves into. But kids with a heart want the good will and acceptance as well as the rescue that is expressed in the rescue.

Still, they want the pain removed and however stupid they’ve been we feel their pain. All of these illustrations—true to life and even true to the life of God—deal with only one aspect of the father’s relationship to one child; his tenderness and affection. And here’s a truth we don’t always care to hear: he has a responsibility toward the child to help him grow in all the ways that would make him good for the family and whoever he works with. God has more than one child and they all have needs! That complicates things.

Peace During Trials

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

I should be just as confident that things are going to work out when they look crazy as when everything looks fine and dandy. The opposite is true as well. Even though things look peaceful and calm, that is not an indication of security. Our security comes from God. It is not at all dependent on what is going on around us. Whether it is the economy, our finances, our children, our marriages, we can (and should) trust God with all of it.

Trusting God brings peace… It just dawned on me recently after going through a faith test that it really doesn’t matter whether it is easy or difficult to trust God. I realized that I am no less dependent on God when things are going good as I am when they are going terrible.

We have the promise of God that He will never leave us, nor forsake us. It doesn’t matter how bad things look, it is merely an illusion. Don’t be deceived, when your trust is in God, you could not be more secure.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
